At the Config 2024 conference, Figma unveiled a major redesign of its interface, introduced AI-powered tools, and announced new features aimed at streamlining design workflows and enhancing user experience. This marks the third significant overhaul of Figma since its launch, reflecting the company’s commitment to evolving alongside the changing landscape of design.
Key Highlights of the Redesign
UI3: A Streamlined Interface
- Maximized Canvas Space: Figma’s new UI3 design focuses on clearing the stage for creative work by minimizing distractions. Resizable panels and a slim toolbar at the bottom of the canvas provide a more spacious and adaptable workspace.
- Prioritized Features: The properties panel has been rethought to prioritize critical controls, such as component management and layout options. This change aims to save time and improve efficiency for designers.
- Usability Enhancements: The interface now includes backgrounds on inputs, borders around dropdowns, and rounded corners. Figma introduced 200 new icons to improve visual explanations and interactivity. Optional labels guide new users without hindering experienced designers.
AI Integration
- Figma AI: Integrated into the new UI, Figma AI assists with tasks such as component search and content generation. These tools are designed to expedite time-consuming processes, allowing designers to focus on their creative work.
- AI-Enhanced Features: Similar to drafting tools in other applications, Figma AI offers enhanced asset searches and auto-generated placeholder text, aiming to streamline daily design tasks.
Figma Slides
- Presentation Tool: Figma Slides allows users to create and share presentations directly within the app. This feature supports real-time design changes without affecting the original files and integrates interactive elements like polls and alignment scales.
- Prototype Integration: Users can now present app prototypes within their presentation decks, eliminating the need for separate screen recordings.
“Ready for Dev” Task List: This new feature ensures that final products accurately reflect the developer’s intent, facilitating better collaboration between designers and developers.
The redesigned Figma interface and AI tools are currently in limited beta. Users can join the beta waitlist directly from Figma by navigating to the bottom of the screen, clicking on the “?” icon, and selecting “Join UI3 + AI waitlist.”
The new features will roll out gradually, with a public release expected by the end of the year. The beta phase will be free, but Figma plans to implement usage limits and transparent pricing details upon the official launch.
