Apple is reportedly exploring a significant design shift for its next-generation Apple Watch SE. According to recent reports, the company is testing a plastic design for the new model to reduce manufacturing costs.
The current Apple Watch SE is made from aluminum, similar to Apple’s higher-end watch models. In its 2022 update, Apple redesigned the back case of the SE, using a nylon composite material instead of ceramic. This change aimed to cut costs and improve durability.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, in his Power On newsletter, revealed that Apple is considering replacing the aluminum shell of the Apple Watch SE with rigid plastic. This move is part of Apple’s effort to lower the starting price of the watch, which is currently $249. The switch to plastic could potentially make the Apple Watch SE more affordable, potentially reducing its price to around $199, which is more competitive with Samsung’s affordable watches that start at $199.
Switching to a plastic design could bring several benefits:
- Cost Reduction: Lower manufacturing costs could translate to a lower retail price, making the Apple Watch SE more accessible.
- Weight Reduction: Plastic might make the watch lighter and more comfortable to wear for extended periods.
However, there are also potential drawbacks:
- Durability: Plastic may not offer the same durability and premium feel as aluminum.
- Environmental Impact: An all-plastic design could raise concerns about the environmental impact compared to using recycled aluminum.
Apple’s decision to potentially use plastic aligns with its strategy to offer a more budget-friendly smartwatch option. As noted, Samsung’s entry-level smartwatch is priced at $199, putting pressure on Apple to offer competitive pricing.
The next-generation Apple Watch SE, alongside the Apple Watch Series 10 and Apple Watch Ultra 2, is likely to be announced in September, coinciding with the iPhone 16 launch. The Series 10 is expected to feature thinner cases and slightly larger screens, showcasing Apple’s continued innovation in smartwatch design.
