Apple has released the third beta version of tvOS 18 to Apple TV users, bringing a host of new features and improvements aimed at enhancing the viewing experience. Here’s a detailed look at the six major updates introduced in tvOS 18 beta 3.
1. InSight Feature
Similar to Amazon Prime Video’s X-Ray feature, the new InSight feature provides real-time information about actors, characters, and music from Apple TV+ content. With InSight, users can:
- View detailed information about actors and characters in a scene.
- Access actor filmography pages directly from the TV app.
- Identify and add songs playing in a scene to an Apple Music playlist.
2. Enhanced Dialogue
Leveraging machine learning and computational audio, the Enhance Dialogue feature improves vocal clarity over background music and noise. This enhancement is now available not only on HomePod speakers but also on built-in TV speakers, HDMI-connected speakers, AirPods, and other Bluetooth devices. Supported content on iPhone and iPad can also benefit from this feature.
3. Automatic Subtitles
tvOS 18 introduces automatic subtitles that appear at optimal moments, such as when:
- The language in a show or movie differs from the device language.
- Users mute the audio.
- Users skip back while watching.
4. 21:9 Aspect Ratio Support
For users who prefer connecting their Apple TV 4K to a projector, tvOS 18 beta 3 adds support for a 21:9 aspect ratio, offering a cinematic viewing experience for movies and shows.
5. Redesigned Apple Fitness+ Interface
The Apple Fitness+ app gets a refreshed interface, making it easier for users to explore and engage with their favorite exercises.
6. FaceTime with Continuity Camera and Live Captions
The FaceTime app on tvOS 18 now supports Live Captions for English in the US and Canada, allowing users to read what others are saying during a FaceTime call directly on their TV screen.
Additional Updates and Compatibility
In addition to these new features, tvOS 18 includes new screensavers and other minor improvements. Alongside tvOS 18 beta 3, Apple has also released the third beta versions of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia, watchOS 11, and visionOS 2.
tvOS 18 is compatible with Apple TV HD (2015) and later models, although some features may require the latest Apple TV hardware. The update is expected to be available to the public this fall, with a public beta version coming later this month.
